ANYONE WITH A BAJA TURBO

Post by craz z »

So i'm new to posting but not to checking out this forum.

I'm here to warn people with the BAJA TURBO's

I have a 2005 baja turbo. My mom has a 2005 baja turbo. They are both grey. But mine has the GENERAL's on it. THANK YOU FOR SUCH A WONDERFUL reccomendation of tire. Even the tire guys loved the pick.

Anyways.

Bought my turbo 120,000 miles 2 weeks seized engine. Luckily got everything replaced brand new you name it. THANKS it wasn't easy SUBARU. 5 months of being without a car with no nothing to report.

My moms turbo just recently popped. Don't know if the engine is fried yet.

So in the mean time obviously this is no coincidence to cars nearly identical crash and burn. I took to the net and found pretty much NOTHING zero zilch of this problem. Oh yeah people have the same problem i do but got the same thing blown car turbo is the suspect nothing to report.

well digging around and going to a different model legacy. which is close to us found a HOARD of problems. You guessed it the TURBO

Essentially our engines are no different then the STI, etc. except for some select parts, computer, etc.

well I find out everyone's turbo was going out. This was likely to be the main cause and Fix.
VERY VERY VERY IMPORTANT LINK DON'T FORGET THIS ONE.

I know its a different car and different forum. But our cars have this TOO!

Banjo's are great for breaks not so good for lubing turbo's add a damn filter to it its a recipe for disaster.

Subaru loves to sweep all this under the rug. NO knowledge of this screen even being there at all. Sometime in 07-08 a tsb is issued saying that we need to stay on top of changin our oil WHAT A BUNCH OF CRAP. and just in case you don't change your oil on time and at 3750miles this will BLOW YOUR ENGINE. Not even Acknowledging the FACT THAT THIS FILTER SHOULD BE A ROUTINE ROUTINE YES ROUTINE MAINTENANCE CHECK.

Sorry for ranting on my first post but when my car blew its turbo. I was bummed I was scared that paying 12k for a car that needed a 10,000$ engine and a loan rollling at the same time. Being out of a car with ZERO feed back for months while paying the payment. I was so fortunate they did what they did. I do like subaru they are good cars. However this little turbo problem is SERIOUS.

Thanks for listening.
The Genral Grabbers do NOT throw the car in any conditions Truly an amazing difference over the regular tires that are available. and not to mention a tough look

Buying used vehicles can certainly be a craps shoot. Especially high-miles ones, and especially when one doesn't know enough about the model in question to do a decent evaluation of its condition (most of us, I'm afraid).

This information was put out by Subaru, and it contains a VIN range in which to check. The fact that Banjo-type connections are involved is entirely irrelevant. The issue is completely an oil- and service-related one. I opened these lube lines up on mine when the TSB came out, and they're clear of debris or obstructions.

Know how Subaru says to change the oil on short intervals no matter what your driving conditions are? This is one of the big reasons why. Poor maintenance combined with the way Subie manages their engines can lead to big problems. Which begs the question: What if they didn't put screens in the lines, and a chunk of gunk got into a turbo, starved it of oil, and caused it to fail? What would the cries be then?

I'm glad they fixed your issue.

got my "new" turbo in the shop having this checked right now.

Printed up the Subaru service bulletin about this as well.

Helps that my favorite shop both works on race cars, and one of the mechanics is a WRX fanatic :) He was already checking service records on the car to see about the screen:)

edit: mechanic verified the screens were pulled both for the turbo and the hydraulic valve adjustment when the PO replaced the turbo. I figure with regular oil changes, good synthetic oil, good filters, there should be no worry of anything nasty getting into the turbo bearings.

got the last of the oil leaks (the one where the remote oil filter line attaches) and I'm golden.

damn the turbo is a fun car. forget about budgeting for maintenance, I better set some aside for tickets...
