Power Band

Post by eblanks »

Hi,

Every vehicle I've owned (that was a manual trans):

1. I put in 1st gear
2. I hit gas
3. I watch the tac.
4. I listen for the engine to increase it tourk (sp.) producing sound
5 once the sound changes I've found the sweet spot called the power band where the engine is most efficient to shift gears at (this is so the engine isn't strugling when I shift and it isn't racing when I shift; unless I'm racing [smilie=666.gif] ).

My problem is I think 2500rpm is too high and the engine is so smooth and so quiet that I can't tell without dinoing it and I don't know where to find an AWD dino.

So do you know where the Turbo Baja's powerband is?

first off, your right that every car has a sweet spot in the power band that just seems to bring it to life. however i disagree that 2500rpm is to high most online sources rate the peak torque output at 3600rpm so it should be around there.

I agree with Matt as 2500 is actually when the turbo starts to put its foot in the engine's ass and make it giddy-up!

for an upgrade though...you could look at getting one of these possibly?!?!?

Right,

2500 is the start of the power band. This is where I can shift gears and not waste gas. 3600 is where I can shift when I'm raceing right?

I shift at 2200 rpm's if I am being fuel conservationist about my driving...if I need the giddy-up...I am closer to 4K when I am feeling saucy and playing with someone because the Scooby is very unnassuming...

That's what I was looking for. I thought I was shifting a little too high at 2500. when I had my second best vehicle (now that I own the BAJA) my 22RE toyota truck 5sp manual would shift at 2500 and run great till they stole her from me. I'll start shifting at 2200.

My other power / fuel conservation plans are to use the K&N filter that I put in yesterday and use Mobil 1 synthetic oil 1040 weight to protect the engine (with the 1040 weight) in my Chicago land cold environment and use some good, long lasting, slick stuff (synthetic) to let the engine run free [smilie=666.gif]

Any other ideas? I want to get the bed cover cause I think my open bed acts like a parachute holding my quick & nimble BAJA back  .

How much do you want to spend? A catless up pipe and good tune make a world of difference in the Baja's. (stage 2 even more so [smilie=lil_red_devil.gif] )

Where in Chicago are you?

I'm on the south side and would love to have a cat back but how much is that and how loud is it. I mean I'm not in college anymore :( so I don't want to blow out the neighboor's windows when I start it up at 12am :)

Thanks,

Ok, so it's not totally accurate in your case since mine has an STI turbo and stuff like that, and mine has an awesome, wide and use able power curve, but maybe it will help?
