Hey there!
Yes the 2000-2004 Legacy/Outback struts are slightly different but are 100% compatible. 2005+ Legacy/Outback struts are not compatible however.

The outback struts are shorter, so if you want to do those you really should replace all 4 struts so your car isn't "raked" and handles differently (worse).
You can still get struts through the dealer last time I checked. Not as expensive as you'd think.
