I was out driving my baja and got stopped at a light on a hill.
when I took my foot off the brake it drilled back like a standard. Is that normal? Anyone elses do that?
my old car never did that

Never had that happen to me that I remember, but here in Cheeseland, we don't have too many big hills to stop at. Since the engine was idlin at the stop, I would figure this to be normal. I have had stuff like this happen to me in other cars that I have owned if I was up north on a big hill. Anyone else had this happen?? Mike

My other car didnt do that.
Scared the crap out of me because I wasn't expecting it and it almost drifted back into a car

Mine does it. I don't think I've driven an AT car that did this since the 70s. Getting rid of whatever it is that makes an AT car hold its position on a hill must've saved Subaru a couple of bucks, I suppose.

its probably just the torque converter. Just keep the revs alittle higher and it won't roll back when you let off the brake.

Well......I was on a very steep hill the other nite on the way home, and I had to stop. When I let off the brakes, she rolled backwards. I figured it would happen, so I was ready on the brake. This was a VERY steep hill that I don't go up much. I have had this happen to other vehicles that I have owned on that hill before. This time it refreshed my memory, thats all. Mike

Yup, one good reason to have an auto trans. What happened to the "Hill Holder". I read years ago that Suby had taken Studebakers idea and reincarnated it for manual trans cars. They must have dropped it, since I have not heard anything about it in awhile. Mike

I've gotten into the habit of dropping it into neutral when I'm stopped at a light, so that there isn't as much stress on components while sitting there idling. If you're going to try this the key is to make sure you shift back into gear and allow time for any slack in the system to be picked up. (takes a second or so) If you don't it will be a very rough thump into 1st when you start to accelerate.

As far as my Baja and the auto holding hills, it would depend on the slope of the hill. Some it would hold no problem while stopped but the steeper ones in my area would cause me to roll back if I didn't stay on the brake. I seem to think this occurred at about the same angles for my last two cars as well. (Isuzu Amigo and a Ford Tempo)

Stopping on hills and relying on your auto trans to hold u without using brakes is what has your torque converter going out. This is a very bad habit for any auto trans vehicle and its what brakes are for. On hills, stay on your brakes til u are ready to go. Your owners manual will tell u that, and your baja will thank u for it.

Thank god some good sense showed up before some one else said "Take up the slack" whatever that means.

i also have a Chevy Silverado and it always rolls back on a hill

Almost every automatic vehicle will do this..your transmission is not a brake...

Every auto tranny will do that given a hill big enough to overcome the slight amount of power delivered without pushing the gas pedal. If you're on a steep hill just hold the brake while you give it a little gas. You won't roll.
