Howdy. I'm new to the forum--but not new to the world of modifying turbo Subarus. I generally stay away from forums, mainly because I am in my dotage, and simply do not have time to reply in the kind of depth that reasonable questions demand. Gomen ne?
Recently, I helped a friend start a build on an 05/06 Turbo Baja. It's the first turbo Baja we've worked on. Lots of normally aspirated Subarus, but not a turbo-Baja.
This particular car is in extremely good condition--with the exception of the engine and the wheels. It was pulled behind an RV for years. The guy who owned it, however, insisted on using normal octane gas, and on hitting the wheels against the curb to determine the distance from the curb. You get the idea. He had replaced the turbo several times. I have no idea where the turbo came from.
Opening the hood, however, was a pleasant surprise. Almost everything in the engine compartment is an exact copy of what is contained inside an 05 Subaru Forester XT. We've put together more than a few FXT's. In fact, I own two. An 04, which is a bit of an animal car. And an 05, which is the easiest, most fun car I've ever driven in City traffic, and on crowded highways. We simply copied the 05 FXT to modify the Baja.
All went well until we got to the fuel pump. It turns out that, at least on the Baja we have, the fuel pump and the fuel pump module and even the fuel tank are slightly shorter than in the FXT, the Legacy GT Wagon, and the STI. But "slightly" was enough to make it impossible to use a fuel pump that would fit any of those cars. We ordered a fuel pump from Subaru, and furnished the VIN number from the car. It didn't fit. We ordered from NAPA, AutoZone, O'Reilly's, eBay. None of them fit. Long story short, we finally found a Bosch fuel pump that fits. But we are worried that it doesn't have enough output. Pressure is where it should be, but as of this writing, the car is still not tuned (tomorrow night is tune night), and has thus not gone any further than to the tire shop for alignment.
We would greatly appreciate any experience and knowledge concerning fuel pumps for the Baja turbo.
The car has an Auto transmission. The engine is a new EJ255 block from Subaru. The heads have been checked and cleaned. Stock valves, but titanium springs and retainers. All gaskets, hoses, any part that bolts onto the engine is either OEM or Aftermarket new. I am partial to Grimmspeed gaskets and parts. The boost controller (3-port) is Grimmspeed. Topmount is Grimmspeed. BOV is stock Subaru STI. Injectors are stock (but new). Turbo is a 16G Blouch. Plugs are stock. Aftermarket fuel pressure regulator and aftermarket fuel pulse regulator.
Injector shut-down is normally set at about 7200 rpm. Redline is about 7000. Max boost is not more than 21 psi. Yes, the stock injectors will handle a Blouch 16G with a max boost of 21 psi. On a Mustang Dyno, target wheel horsepower is 290-306 (numbers obtained by existing cars).
Again, any info about fuel pumps would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
