Weekend Project! "Painted grill"

Post by Wingzero_ac19x »

Excellent weather this weekend so I decided to tackle a small project I've had in mind for a while. Now I know it's not the first time someone has redone the grill on a Baja, but I wanted to post my results and get opinions. We all know the way the Baja grill looks from the factory and in the case of mine, the chrome was flaking and really stuck out in my opinion. I had a few cans of plastidip laying around that I had intended for a project on my Celica, but I figured what the heck:

After trimming out the emblem:

This is just a hold over until I can finish work on an all mesh grille I want to make for the truck. I will have to find another Baja or Outback grill to work with. If I can get it done the way I want it should be epic.
Also installed a Spectre lifetime air filter:

Finally, ordered a Subaru badge of ownership!
I have to wait a few more hours for the plastidip to fully cure before installing on truck. I will post a final pic of it on the truck once its done. 8)

Looks good. Is yours a 5-speed as well?

Thanks! Nah, its an automatic. First vehicle I have ever owned that wasn't a five speed ironically.

That's cool! I always wondered what that would look like on mine, now I know! I would like to make a recessed mesh grille as well.

Awesome! Glad it helped! Once I can get my hands on another grill I will begin working on my mesh grill design. I also have an idea I have been working on for a few months about a bed cover for the truck. Once my budget allows and I can start fabrication, I will post up the the results of both projects. I will say this: The bed cover is going to be completely unique and I'm hoping it will be popular.

Ha! Is this a competition? =P I hope to make a soft shell for mine...I've already got the custom rack back there to hang it on. I was actually thinking a body color rim for the grille with black mesh recessed behind. Subaru symbol suspended in the center. No idea how or if it will happen though.

That's what I've been hoping to do, too. A nice black mesh grill. This chrome has to go! I've been wanting to talk to a couple of the engineers in our factory to see if they could make me something.

I also painted my grill a few weeks ago while I had it in the garage.

Bajaguy: Sounds cool; once you complete your projects, post pics I would love to see what you came up with. I think for my grill I'm going to do away with the Subaru emblem in favor of a mod to the grill to give it some more utility. MWAHAHAHAHA (sorry... evil genius/maniacal laughs are awesome)

Trucklett: I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the chrome just doesnt look right. Hopefully those engineers will be able to set you up with something awesome!

bdover: Grill looks great! Good color choice on your Baja 8)

The grille isn't high on my list of priorities though... I'll probably get mud flaps, put a 5th seat in, and possibly a skid plate first. Then I will probably try the soft shell. THEN the bull bar and grille might happen. I will definitely post pics. Nothing will happen till summer though.
