Write up on lift

I can't seem to find a picture write-up for the 1" spacer lift I keep hearing about. I would like to see what it entails before I decide to do it. Though I am mechanically inclined, I have never taken off springs before. Also, what material are you guys using for it? Steel, aluminum, stainless...etc.
