Roof Rack/Cargo Basket Recommendations?

Post by KensAudio »

I'm thinking it's time to get a roof rack for my Baja. The initiative came from New Years', where my wife, myself, and two dogs went away for the weekend, and with the dogs in the folded back seat, the bed filled up fast, and I had to use a soft-sided cargo carrier (typically goes on top of a car) on top of my Ozz Bros. tonneau cover to carry the extra stuff, but then I lost much of my rear-view visibility.

In any case, I've got the stock crossbars, with the tear-drop cross-section. Given the relatively low-capacity (100 pounds) limitation on the roof rack, I'm hoping to find a light-duty basket so that I spend less of that 100# on the basket itself, and more on what I put in it.
I guess my priorities would be light-weight and easy-on/easy-off.

What does anyone else use? Encountered any durability problems? Suggestions, either makers or vendors?

Thanks,
- K

I used the Yakima Basket Case rack ($150 or so) for years. Worked great, lightweight to take on and off, and held at least 100 lb no worries.......

Well, of those two, I'd steer toward the Yakima. The Bajaracks all look plenty capable - in fact they'd be tremendous overkill for a couple overnight bags and a cooler. But also, the Yakima weighs only ~15 pounds, whereas the Baja Racks use up 30-60% of my roof capacity. Doesn't make much sense for me to put 35 pounds of gear in a 65 pound rack...

But it's always fun to window-shop!

Thanks, both.
