Sport activity lights plug ins or lack off

Post by hardtail3 »

I just want to share this bit of information to save you time installing the sport activity light. I just installed mine tonight and was a long one.

The instructions will have two diagram of where to plug the relays that comes with the kit. It was not specific that 2 are provided because it depends on the year of your Baja.

Mine is a 2006 and called for the rectangular relay. I researched and found the cylindrical one is for the earlier year. Not sure were the cut off is.

If you do not find the plug in connector which is suppose to be taped up under the dash. Stop looking! Your eyes are not bad. They do not exits on the later model. If you look at the fuse area there is a row of already plugged in relays. Look for a vacant spot and you will see the 4 pins would fit in one of them. That should do it!

I hope this helps any new Sport Activity light installers like myself and saved someone a backache crawling under the dash upside down.

I just want to make a correction to my post. The kit came with 1 relay (Rectangular) and 1 solenoid (round) which they also called a relay in the instructions. The previous owner of my baja must have had lights before because there was one already in place.

Couple of more notes related to installation(non electrical)

Manual shows removal of bed and side rails. Do not need to force and completely remove. Im still not sure why its necessary? Maybe to just to loosen to avoid damages to the removal and accessing the electrical behind the brake light. By the way that is where you will find the plug in for the wiring harness that goes on the roof.

2nd: Instruction ask to cut a 1/4 inch off the brake light housing. Did not see the need for this since there was enough gap to feed the wire thru. Maybe it's for longevity to avoid the wire getting cut with friction over time. I don't know but hated the idea of altering the housing. You be the judge.

Its been almost a month now having the lights. They still look great on the truck and I still love em. Here is what I don't like ... MPG and the noise. It did quiet down significantly when I installed a moon roof wind deflector but I think it's still creating some drag.
Today I drove about 180 highway miles and was getting about 24 mpg which I am happy. But I been getting poor mileage in city. I will experiment and force myself to drive more conservative to see if that makes a difference.

If I'm still getting poor mileage I will entertain a roof fairing for the next upgrade.

Ok found another solution for the spot light wind drag.

Went to the bike shop today and bought some bicycle seat post quick release lever.

I idea came when I thought about position the lights facing downward toward the roof when not in use. The only problem is it would be a hassle loosening the bolts every time.

Solution: Quick release!

Also doubles as the brightest dome light ever if you slide open the moon roof from the inside.
