I want to swap the rear diff and tranny from a 2003 Impreza WRX into a 2003 Baja. The tranny is #TY754VN2BA and comes with an R160 rear diff.
What will be required beyond that?
Will my original rear shafts fit the R160 rear diff?
Will the rear shafts from the Impreza fit the Baja rotor/wheel assembly?
Gotta chose a direction soon, hope you can help!
Rear diff swap

Re: Rear diff swap
The Baja axle will fit the r160. The case may look different but everything will bolt up.

Re: Rear diff swap
Thank you again, hocrest! I hope to have a 'new' tranny sent my way tomorrow. As you might have noticed from the number on this one, I am going for the higher ratio to save a little fuel. After it burns a tank or two I will post the results.
That unlisted tranny number from earlier posts turns out to be a unit mostly limited to the Soviet Union. If my data is correct it has a final ratio of 3.11:1. I never could locate a matching rear end else I would be slipping that gearbox in for some real fuel savings.
Who knows, I might catch up to that 200, 000+ mile Baja yet. Let's see 178,000 + 40k/yr......

Re: Rear diff swap
No problem, and just FYI, the impreza rear shafts will fit at both ends, but are a little shorter than the Baja shafts.
Also, the rear diff is actually a 3.54. The front diff is a 3.9 and there is a 1.1:1 gearing in the transfer case where it sends power to the rear diff.

Re: Rear diff swap
That unusual number gearbox, TY754VSAAA, turns out to be the same gearing as TY754VN2BA. It would also work with an R160 rear.
Wish I would have learned this a few days sooner - would have saved me $700.
For any looking, there is an Ebay listing for TY754VSAA with 48-51k miles for $499. That's a steal but now that I've bought one for $1,200 I cannot even buy it for resale.
