new BAJA owner and LOVING IT!!

Post by themoneypit »

HELLO EVERYONE! so yeah NEWBIE here to the bajas, but not subaru :D
i bought it little over a month ago, 2005 BAJA TURBO. 1 owner with 108k. drove it 30 miles from the dealer and the turbo grenaded. got that covered under their 90 day warranty and ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!! in the past 2 wks ive changed (takes deep breath)
timing belt, idlers, tensioner
waterpump
serpentine belts
plugs
tranny service
all filters
front pads and rotors
rear pads and rotors
thermostat
hood bug guard
sunroof deflector
front and rear diff fluids

i did all the work myself, i plan on using this to commute back and forth between our house in ny and our house in ct. it has the hard tonneau cover on it which is awesome! im anal about preventative maint, to me its cheap insurance... when the turbo blew, i had it done at subaru, and the pan was flushed, oil screens replaced (but theyre coming out when i do the next oil change).

ill be doing 4-500 miles weekly with this car and hope it holds up as well as my other subarus have (well exept my 97 obw with the typical phase I 2.5 notorious head gasket failure) im def a subaru addict ive had everything from brats and ea81s (still have one with a plow) to the legacys, loyales, SVX, outbacks, u name it... but most of all, my now second favorite subaru of all time, since i bought the baja, are the XT6's. ive had atleast a dozen of them, they were so ahead of their time, and like the baja, never took off in the market because of their love it or hate it look. i have 2 currently, one is absolutely mint condition 88 xt6 full time 4wd that i bought 4 yrs ago from the original owner who was 82yo. i will post up a few pics when i get a chance.

Are you talking about the small screens that go inside the oil line that feed the turbo?
I did not know they could be left out - did someone tell you screens are not necessary?

My mechanic told me that the screens protect the turbo from any particles in the oil, and the main reason turbos blow is because the screens are clogged and turbo is starved for oil.

from what ive read from aftermarket turbo manufactures for these cars, they REQUIRE you to remove the screens so the turbo isnt starved for oil. i figure if the oil filter doesnt catch a "particle" and it flows thru the turbo, then it isnt going to hurt it. so, yes, as soon as i do the next oil change in about 500 miles or so the screens are coming out.
