The other day when I pulled into the gas station and hit the brakes, I heard a humming whistle sound, like Wooooooooh (not a brake screeching sound, but sounded almost like air rushing through a bellows). Then yesterday when accelelerating and braking both, I got the sound several times. So I took it to the mechanic and they had the car all day today and could not replicate the sound. It didn't come back. I seem to remember hearing a similar situation to somoene calling into CarTalk, and the guys said it could be a vacuum pressure leak in the Master Brake Cylinder I think. Any ideas? I had the brakes done with new fluid, pads, rotors and all about 6 months ago. Any Ideas?
And coincidentally, my resonator tube fell off of my intake piping the other day. Could that be related?

Re: Whistle Whooooh sound when accelerating or braking
I would closely inspect all that intake ducting and connections. That was my first guess anyway, but since you said it came loose already it makes me doubly suspicious. The closer you have an opening to the final intake the more noise you will hear. I replaced the top of an airbox on one of my motorcycles with a totally open frame to hold the air filter and now I hear a considerable HONK when I open the throttle.

I used Gorilla tape some time ago to reattach the Resonator tube, and apparently that didn't hold and it had been hanging in my car under the hood for weeks. I will checkup the intake ducting again.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Whistle Whooooh sound when accelerating or braking
I think I have isolated this to the power steering pump. I evacuated all PS fluid and refilled and the sound has mostly gone away and is far less frequent than before.

Re: Whistle Whooooh sound & Burnt Coolant Smell
The sound has returned and gotten worse. It seems only to happen when the Air Conditioning is on high when it is hot out. Now the sound sometimes comes even when in Park and stopped, running the motor with the AC on. I wonder if it is AC related and if it is not for the power steering at all.
I think at 76,600 miles it may be time for me to consider another car.
When chaning a flat, I just found out that my donought spare is dry rotted.
I got that wiered whislte noise
the AC doesn't work as good as it used to (though since I recharged it, at least it does cool somewhat)
There is a burnt coolant smell (I wonder if this means a Head Gasket is going or if I have a leak or water pump about to die?)

I know this was 6 years ago; but i have just run into the same issue. Did you get ever find out what it is - or has anyone else had this issue?

Re: Whistle Whooooh sound when accelerating or braking
I got rid of the car shortly after that. The power steering pump was on the fritz. Now I drive a 2011 Honda Element (another discounted AWD utility vehicle). I also had a blown head gasket.
