Post by BAJAMediC »

Hey im just making sure, i am at 86,000 miles on my Baja ('03) and my dad scared me about replacing the timing belt and the waterpump by 100,000 miles, has anyone done this procedure on their own? im not gunna let anyone work on my baby, and i've done timing belts before... but never on a Japanese car.... after i did the oil change on the car for the 1st time .... OMG SO EASY..... so what are the conciderations I should be looking out for when doing this procedure

Long time since this question was asked, but here goes: Get yourself a chain wrench to hold the main pulley while you loosen the bolt, regular strap wrenches aren't strong enough. I broke 3 before finally getting the chain.
You need a shop manual. Get one.
When you pull the timing belt everything will move. When you put the new belt on the main and right pulleys will stay in place, but the left side will have to be held because it will move. Those damn pulleys are SHARP! Don't try holding it with your hands, use a wrench on the bolt.
This is not a one-person job! One person will have to hold the left pulley in place while the other person puts the belt and tensioner on. Stretch the belt over the pulleys by moving everything slightly backwards and then moving them back into place with the belt teeth engaged on the pulley teeth. Once again, be careful because the pulley edges are SHARP! and will cut the hell out of your hands.
The next time this needs to be done (at 210K miles) the dealer will do it, I don't care what they charge it will be worth it.
