2.5 Engine that will drop / fit in our BAJA

My BAJA has that cylinder slapping issue. It is still running perfect after warm up but may have to replace it sooner than normal. Therefore, when I'm searching for a 2.5L engine down the road, which year and modle of subaru engine will drop in our BAJA without extra modification???? Or which engine code will work for our car.

i.e.,... Can I use 2.5L from impreza, forester, .... from 2003-2007 ... etc...

I dug up this old post that is relevant to my interest, as I have to replace the engine in my 2003 Sport 5-speed.

Can anyone with experience please tell me what other used/salvage engines I need to search for and if they actually fit?

Wikipedia's page about the EJ Engine says the EJ251 fits the following models:

My engine code is EJ251AWEWL. Can just any E251 from the above models work or is the suffix AWEWL important? Do I have to find a 5-speed?

Please help me if you know. I am dead in the water and searching for Baja parts notoriously turns up few results and even then the information is often incorrect.
