Installed in-dash CB Radio & hardwired 4 outlet lightr strip

Post by davecoon13 »

I will try to post pix later this weekend. I mounted a compact Cobra Ultra II unit in my dash underneath the FM Radio, and I also hardwired my 4 outlet 12v lighter outlet plug strip, since I have the 2003 Sport which has only one lighter plug from the factory. Now I have 5 lighter plugs (to service GPS, iPod, My cellphone, Wife's cellphone etc.), factory outlet plus 4 on the strip--before I had the strip plugged into the factory outlet.

Tomorrow I am also supposed to pickup my ARE cap. I will keep everyone posted. Now that my Baja has been paid off for a few months, I am using the money I previously spent on car payments to customize the Baja how I've wanted it all along. With all these increasing rains, I am getting a cap because the Ozzbros is not completely water tight. Supposedly the ARE cap is removable, I will find out more tomorrow when I get it installed.

I hope you like its looks, have you seen one in person? I was not impressed by the way it makes our trucks look. Kinda wierd IMO. But to each his own! Have fun! and GL

The cap does look weird, but Function over form...now I have a weatherproof storage area.

Nice. I installed the EXACT same CB in the same spot about a year ago. My installation was a little different and set it right of center and left a little nook to the left where I put pens and a small flashlight. I installed mine as I was mounting the new holder for the activity lights switch. I had to cut a hole in the new plastic compartment to allow for the CB's speaker to be heard in the cab. How did you deal with the issue of covering up the speaker? I like your power port. i was thinking of doing something similar with a power splitter like the ones you can get at truck stops and travel centers.

I thought of leaving a nook next to the CB to store the microphone, but it wasn't large enough to store the mic, so I figured, what the heck, I will just do a legit mount. The speaker is actually covered but it still seems to be plenty loud enough where it is at, even though it is pointed inside the dash, I can hear it no problem on all but the very lowest volume setting.

Glad to hear of another Baja that has a Citizens' Band Radio installed in it!

Nice mount on the mic, btw. I just hung mine over the mirror since the cord is supposedly 9 FEET long! They were never that long in the 70's!

Speaking of, the CB itself is pretty cheap. I guess that's what you get for your $49 or whatever it was. I have a handheld Cobra CB that's much higher quality than this unit. Besides the too long mic cord the mic itself is a HUGE, bulbous thing. Also, the CB is preset for channel 1. That means it defaults to channel 1 every time you turn it on or start the car. I have to hit that little button in the top left corner 2x to get it to go to ch 19. I've done it so often now it's as automatic a proceedure as putting on the seatbelt. Next time I will get a higher quality unit.

I got mine on ebay for $20 or something like that, it was a closeout because the package was damaged, nothing wrong with the unit. I have been looking, and it seems like there are other Midland and Cobra mics that are smaller, I might replace it at some point.

I've been doing that also, but I remembered reading in the book that there is a way to make it always default to 19 instead of 1. I forgot what the book said, but you have to push the buttons so many times in a few seconds in a certain order, I will let you know if I figure out, but I read that there is a way to make it default to 19 instead of 1.
