Back in high school (feels like so long ago, now), there was a kid who killed his passenger. They were street racing. Kid pulled along side his "competitor". Oncoming traffic appeared. He hit the brakes and swung back into the right lane, or so the story goes. Got into the gravel, overcompensated, got sideways, and played pinball with a few parked cars. From the secondhand description of the car, it matched the level of destruction that Baja went through.

Depending on the road conditions, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to hear/see that kind of damage. I'm not a forensic expert, but even I can see how the front end of the car is buckled upwards. If the Baja's anything like my '97 Outback, there's only four bolts holding the engine to the tranny, plus two more in the engine mounts, but... I'd still imagine it takes one heckuva hit to dislodge an engine like that.

So if that Baja driver managed to lose control (overcompensated, poor road conditions, night time and didn't see a sharp turn ahead, whatever), and managed to hit something hard and heavy (rock, concrete barrier, the other side of the ditch/embankment, whatever) at 100mph... that's a lot of energy, and it's got to go somewhere.

I'm just amazed the guy lived through it. To be honest, I hope he learned a lesson from it... and his insurance company... and the DMV of whatever state he's living in.

It does make me feel better about wanting my Baja, in case someone ends up hitting me head on @ 40 mph each.
