Roof Top Retractable Metal Antenna

Post by new03baja »

Is there any shorter black plastic car stereo antenna to replace the ugly manual retractable metal antenna? I am referring to the antenna on the roof on top of the driver. It tends to flap around and rattle during high wind storm. To me, it looks ugly on my Baja. I like something shorter. I see a lot of the 6" black antenna on the roof of most newer vehicles. It looks nicer and it is more stable.

Anyone?

Here is the photo of my 03 Baja with the stainless steel antenna on top of the roof:

I want to replace it with the type of antenna on top of the new WRX, but I haven't fine one to fit in the place of the stainless steel.

Welcome to ScoobyTruck!!!

I agree, the stock antenna's arent too great, I too would love to find a replacement shorty black one. I think it wouldnt be that hard, maybe a little wierd cuz of the curve of the truck right there, the base would have to match pretty well. Hmm, well keep us posted if you find anything!!!

:D

I have been Google around the Net, but I haven't come up with anything. There are a lot of Genius people out there. Somebody must have think of it, and can make good money on eBay for selling this replacement antenna. I don't want to drill another hole on the roof to install a new antenna. I want a replacement that can install using the original screw holes.

Anyone?

Not to throw a wet noodle at this topic, but for some of us, the retractable antenna is actually a plus. A lot of us purchased our Bajas for their utility. Many of us use the roof racks for transporting canoes/kayaks/luggage racks and boxes, etc. and I know for me at least having one of those stubby antennas would preclude that option. I actually looked into that way back when I bought the Baja and at least one other option for a vehicle was discounted after figuring out that the antenna would interfere with using the roof for anything like this.....they are just high enough to render the racks unusable basically.

Just my $0.02 worth.....

If it is install using the same screw holes and the same spot as the original antenna, it is away from the roof rack. The short plastic stubby antenna is very sturdy and it can take some abusing too. If anyone has any information on it, please let me know. I want to get rid of the metal antenna really bad. For some reason, I cannot stand seeing dangling and flapping on my roof!

Something else to consider, although you have probably tried it.........
My FM stereo receiver works just great with only about 4" of the metal antenna extended. I live in rural NoCalif, and the reception is more than adequate for all the stations I can handle. In fact, I have found that it doesn't really improve with the antenna fully extended - as long as there is some of the metal shaft exposed it seems to function the saem. Also, at this length, it does not interfere with my Yakima canoe racks either.........

Hope you find something suitable for a replacement~

Get the turbo model, It has a short black antenna on the rear of the roof in the center as opposed to the standard A-pillar mounted one.

you can wire a CB radio antenna into a radio using A COAX to am/fm conversion wire. They make CB antennas anywhere from 6" to 102". You can get a COAX-AM/FM wire at most truck stops. i wired a CB into my baja. i mounted an old police 102" steel whip antenna in the back of my bed using a ball mount. ill get some pictures up that when i get home this weekend.
