Hella Horns

Post by sporter »

Got my Hella Supertones installed. Some inprovement but not significant, I suppose they're worth $60.00, but don't believe all the hype about how loud they are. The installation instructions are worthless, but there is an excellent post on NASIOC with photos.

I have the 118 db versions. They are significantly louder, but not from inside the car. They are highly directional. If you stand outside, in front of the vehicle, they are considerably louder than the OEM units.

They can be wired thru a relay with larger gauge wire to insure max. volume. The relay gets powered by the stock horn circuit. I have them on my motorcycle wired in this fashion and they really get a cars attention.

I need to add a set to the Baja since the stock horn is pretty pathetic.

Is there a part number for the Hella Supertones?
Does the Baja's unique "switched ground" affect the wiring of these horns? How hard is it to wire to stock horn wiring?

Since I just installed mine last month, I can tell you, ALL I DID was basically unbolt the old horns, and plugged the new ones into the exsiting harness. I had to extend the wires on the far side, because I wanted the horns a lil higher, but the sound improvement was great, but yes they are highly directional, standing off to the side of the car does no justice compared to standing the same distance but right in front.
Just do a google search of Hella supertones if youre looking to buy some

I painted mine to match. :)

Ive only ever heard of "Hella Supertones" I dont know of any other models or versions, I think as long as they have that red grill on them, they are probably the right ones. Maybe on hella's website you could find out if theres different models. I wouldnt know
