to my knowledge no one makes a class III or even a class II hitch. the frame on the baja just isn't strong enough. the subaru oem is the most painless with the plug and play wireing, but there are cheaper, more labor intensive alternatives. the oem hitch can also be looked at as a class I+ hitch. because standard companies only cover the hitch to a towing weight of 2000 lbs, subarus hitch covers the full 2400lbs of baja towing.

FYI, U-haul's branded converter boxes are now plug-n-play. Subaru's exclusive supplier agreement must've run out with the manufacturer?
Anyway, I know of absolutely nothing in the Class II or III realm, but going with almost any non-Subaru brand of receiver hitch and the non-Subaru-labeled plug-n-play connector is much cheaper than the Subaru option.

no i didn't know that. but thats great news! there are several generic hitches out there and most are good quality, it was just getting the wiring right that hurts. but if there is a cheaper option out there now, thats the way to go.
