Road trip in the baja-ny to fl & back!

Post by yellowblaze »

Drove on the beach...rode around with our extended family from the YMR (Yellow Mustang Registry)....met some other baja owners (hoping for some new members on the regisrty!!)....around 3,000 miles and the only complaint is the brakes SUCK. Heres some pics:

In South Carolina:

Daytona beach:

With the YMR:

We need to get the Bajas together for a meet sometime...this was SUCH a blast...we STOPPED traffic, people were pulling over to take pics....I'd LOVE to see a bunch of Bajas in a line! It might take some doing to beat the stats from the YM meet (72 cars, 14 states!), but gotta start somewhere...

Is it just me or did anyone else look at that last pic and have the sesame street "one of these things" song pop in thier heads?

Seriously thanks for the road trip report - It's good to know a long trip is comfortable in the Baja. The on the beach shot looks real nice. What was the problem with the brakes - brake fade?

Forgot to ask - how did you do for mileage?

Hahaha, yeah I had thought the same thing about the "one of these things" song.

Brakes-just don't stop quick enough, and pulsation from the rotors after a couple quick stops (darn Orlando traffic!)

Mileage-best was @29 on the way down-and that was with a Mustang hood in the bed (fit almost perfectly, hung out the back maybe 2-3").

As for the Mustang, it's "competition orange" ;)

We took it down to North Carolina and back (from Baltimore) during the first three weeks that we had it; took a friend with us. Everyone was nice and comfy for the trip, and it ran great -- no complaints about the brakes. I think it got about 29 MPG on the highway and that was with the soft cover on the back.

That mileage is great, I think that is more than they are rated for. I got 31.1 last year on my trip back home from the UP of Michigan. That was without runnin the A/C, as it was a cool day. Mike

Yelloblaze,

It seems that you have participated in car meets before. Have you been part of organizing one? I think it would be awesome to have a Baja meet!

Yup, many. We belong to the YMR an have attended 5 of their meets, and a few local ones too. Yup, twice. I agree-it's rather difficult though, being that we're spread out all over the place. We did get a chance to meet up with bajabob over the summer in Canada, there's a pic here someplace. One Baja gets attention-imagine a line up of Baja's cruisin around!! The YMR has been around for going on 5 years now, and the largest group was in Orlando this year-about 75 cars. To my knowledge, the first YMR related accident happened in charlotte this past summer, when someone rearended another car because they were trying to take a pic of the group cruising by with their cell phone.

I'd love to get the northeasterners together for a group deal at some point, it's just a when & where kind of thing.

Unfortunately, I'm always short on time, busy with work, etc. but if you ever get to organizing a Northeast-meet, I'll gladly help out.

I would be interested as well...would be neato to have Baja's running down the road. Pick a town and a place to meet in that town and let's do it.

It can be done

I did a Mustang drive for the 40th anniversary in '04. Nearly 300 'stangs made the drive from California to Tennessee.

Doubt we could get that many Bajas, but it would be fun to get a few meeting somewhere. Maybe start with some local meetings, then work up to a big national group event?

Anyway... here's how it was done with the Mustangs:

I wanted to get into that, but I didn't have enough vacation time. I really wanted to meet up with ya'll in Mi for the part at Ford. Some friends from the YMR did though. lol, bajas across america. Yeah, I dont see that happening either. Gimme some time, I'm all turned about right now and wont be planning anything for a bit, as my Granfather just passed away....

Sorry to hear about your loss, my condolences.

The winter is about to begin and the weather often just doesn't cooperate for outdoor events. Late spring or summer would be better anyways.
