Help!
I pulled the rear axles while preparing to change out the (very rusty & broken) rear subframe. I didn't realize that they were different part numbers at the time and got them mixed up in the process. Now I'm not sure which is left and right. Is there a way to tell them apart? Vehicle is a 2005 turbo with 5MT

Re: Identifying rear axles
My understanding is, the shafts are the same, with the exception of some flutes cut into the stub that inserts into the differential: they're mirrors of each other, and they're to channel the oil back into the differential, to help prevent leaks. Therefore, looking at the shaft, when the vehicle is moving forward, the oil that sits between it and the outer seal should be channeled back into the diff, similar to how directional tires channel water to the outside away from the center.
Not sure if that's true, but it seems to make sense to me...
I tried looking at https://parts.subaru.com/a/Subaru_2003_ ... E6CBA66CA1 to see if they had diagrams of each, but they just indicate which part numbers are for which side. You could try searching for photos of those part numbers to see if someone posted actual photos.
