05 Baja engine interchange options

Post by Pilotpeat »

At just shy of 150k miles on the car my 2005 Baja has developed a rod knock :-(

In the interest of being able to minimize down time I'm looking for a junk yard motor to drop in while I take my time to do a rebuild on the motor that is currently in the car. I know that some Outbacks and maybe Legacys had the same engine but I'm having trouble finding a good interchange list.

Mine is a 05, manual transmission, normally aspirated.

I think practically any Legacy/Outback engine of the same year/type would fit in the Baja, since they're all based on the same platform... but I'm not sure. A few mechanics said an 04-06 STI engine would even fit in my 2003, with little-to-no modification to the engine mounting points (although there will need to be extensive modification to everything else).

3.0 H6 LLBEAN

Lots of writeups on this swap on legacy forums..

If you swap the auto trans, too.. it's plug and play.

If you use a manual trans there's some electrical trickery for the computer and trouble codes.

Really nice power, and torque with the 3.0 H6.
