New to site/suspension lift question.

Post by OldManRiver »

Hello to all. This is OldManRiver (Lance). In the process of getting my first Baja, a 2005 sport. This will make it my 6th Subaru I have owned, but my first Baja. I am selling new and used Subaru's at the dealership I work at for the last 5 years. I Love the brand.

Question for the members: If I do a suspension lift to the top of the struts, what is the most I can do (1"-2") without having to change any links, arms, shafts, and/or cv joints. My thought is the 1" should be o.k., but I think the 2" would cause too many issues.

Thanks again, OldManRiver out.

How much lift do you want? As you said 1in is easily done with strut top spacers and no big issues, you can also do 4in easily, and my current project is 6in.

What did you have to change out to get the 4"? I am sure more then just 4 spacers on top of the strut.

Correct, it is a system and one could argue it is either a body lift or a suspension lift, in my opinion it is a hybrid of the two. If you crawl under your truck and stare a bit what I am going to describe will make more sense. What the lift does (in the case of a 4in kit) is add 3 in subframes that space the crossmembers to include rear suspension and front crossmemeber etc. 3 inches away from where they presently bolt right up to the subframe. Then on top of each strut is a 4 inch heavy steel spacer that raises the vehicle. The result is 1in more ground clearance at the crossmembers and 4in more clearance on the rest of the truck (bumpers, rocker panels etc.) and of course that is to create clearance for larger tires that give you more clearance at the crossmembers and body.

There are several companies making Subaru lifts, I have done my own from scratch and I have used ones made by SJR. I used his 4in kit for my Baja Sport and am currently installing a custom 5in kit he made for me onto my Baja turbo. I use his kit as a starting point and add some additional things of my own onto it to end up with more lift and shocks etc. http://www.sjrlift.com/index.php/catalo ... 000-detail These kits are the major bits, you still need to handle the details like shift linkages, steering shaft extension and such yourself. You will need to do some welding and there are not instructions on every little bit. There have been 3 lifted Bajas (excluding the small spacer jobs) and I own 2/3 of them, the other is in Lithuania. I would LOVE to see more of these running around and I hope you decide to take it on. If I can be of any help please ask.
