D@mned oil smell and leak is back.

Post by Zombaja »

so when I first saw my 05 Turbo, it had a significant puddle underneath it on the passenger side - I could see oil droplets on the filter. So I replaced the filter, and drove the car for a few hundred miles. Always when the motor is hot (and even worse when first really getting on boost) there is oil smell thru the cabin fans. Replaced (well, installed - the cabin air filters were missing) and brought it in to my favorite mechanic. The first leak was found at where the remote oil filter mounts to the block. I had the banjo bolts checked for clogs on the turbo (screens already removed) and they added tracking dye. Still got oil smell but figured it was previous leaks "cooking off" -we were loathe to pressure wash due to all the sensors, wires, plugs and everything else in the area.

Month later, still getting oil smell. And I finally have three days where I have to drive nowhere. Fourth day, I move the car - big oil spot in the same general area as before. Seems driving it daily was enough to keep cooking off the constant small leak. No budget for a couple more weeks to bring it in to have the leak seaxrched out, and I suspect they'll have to have the car for more than a day, meaning I gotta deal with rentals and more expense.

Assuming the oil lines to the turbo and hydraulic valve timing were checked during the "look for potential clogged screens" work, and that the remote oil filter assembly remains fixed (I hope that's a valid assumption) where should I have my mechanic focus his attention next? Do valve cover gaskets become a problem on the turbo side or is there somewhere else that does a slow leak over there?

Spark plug seals. Valve cover gaskets. And head gaskets should all be checked. It's good you have had the dye in there for a few miles. Now just to find the highest point of oil. Usually spark tubes would cause a misfire before they drip to the ground.
