wheel bearing repacement

Post by Baja life 06 »

Hey I was wondering, does anyone know how difficult it is to replace the front wheel bearings on the Baja.. I've been getting some noise when I'm turning left ( like on a round about) or (wide left turn). That's telling me that the right side bearing must be going.. I'm wondering how difficult a job this would be..

It's not bad of you have the proper tools to do the job.....The most important piece would be a press I'd say to press the bearings out and back in....

I just had to replace the front passenger side cv,
Wheel bearing, hub, and lower ball joint. It's not a hard job, but definitely requires a press. I took the hub and spindle to a brake and muffler shop, they charged me $35+tax to press out the old pieces of the bearing, and attach the new hub to spindle, press in the new bearing. As a comparison, the Subaru dealership was gonna charge $135+tax JUST to press out old/press in new bearing.

Hello Everyone

I know this is an old post, but I had
a related question and some info.

All the auto parts stores seem to carry
the bearings on their websites.

Is there anything else needed to replace
the bearing, other than the bearing itself?

Are there any seals etc. (I don't see anything
listed).

One site says to replace the retaining circlips
(a must for me), but I don't know if there are
one or two clips per side? I attached a pic of
the circlips ($6 each)

Here's the info for what it's worth:

1 - Stopped by a local garage and asked if they
could press a bearing in for me and how much.
The total part of his conversation was to look up
from his chair and say "$134.50"

2 - Stopped by a national chain and they said
drop it off and leave it for the day if I can. He
said it would be around $40 + tax (I've had them
press bearing in previously).

Thanks . . . Brian

Here's the answer to all your wheel bearing on a budget questions:

Subaru wheel bearings are pressed in! What a bitch!

Good news is that you can just replace the entire knuckle, without spending an arm and a leg.

Go to www.car-part.com and find a decent used knuckle (knee is with all the control arms still attatched).

I put a used knuckle on my impreza for $50.

Having it pressed on costs twice that, plus the parts, plus the PITA!

Used knuckle people! Bolt it on, no alignment needed.

I got a parts diagram, ordered the parts
at the dealer and had them press the
bearing in ($40).

The parts were:

1 - Knuckle
2 - Hub
3 - Bearing
4 - Inner Seal
5 - Outer Seal
6 - Snap Ring
7 - Ball Joint Pinch Bolt

Total Cost was $613 for each side ($1226 Total).

Also at the same time, one both sides, I replaced:

1 - Control arms
2 - Rear control arm bushings
3 - Ball Joints
4 - Drive shafts
5 - Rotors & Pads

Essentially, everything from the strut down is new.

If anyone has any questions on this, I'll be glad to help.
