inappropriately locking seatbelt.

Post by millarg »

So my drivers side seatbelt locks periodically, sometimes it can't even pull it out to wear (I sense a ticket in the near future).

Disassembled trim piece (1 press locker removed) and had a look, I was expecting something simple with an obvious gear pawl which I could lube - no such luck.

Took a photo, hopefully it attaches.,

Anyways it is pretty much sealed, with a housing on the forward side (drivers) anyone advice on where to spray wd40 in place - really don't want to remove or disassemble.

This thing? Yeah, mine did that too. I did actually take it apart (it's a pain to wind the spring back) It appears there is this plastic piece that flops back and forth to lock the thing. I'm not sure how it is supposed to be, but it wasn't working properly. It was expensive to replace ($100) but well worth it. It's pretty easy to install. Don't forget to keep the cap on the upper pivot...the new ones don't come with it.

Yup, that be her, what I've done is pull out the entire belt and clipped so it can't rewind, then used a can of WD40 with the "straw" nozzle and squirted it liberally in ever place I can get it to go (the ones that look like they move) - I think the white plastic cover to the front is where the gear pawl is??? it is pretty well sealed (and don't want to take it apart - I note your spring comment).

Anyways have "exercised" and the belt will leave fascia plastics off so I can repeat over next few days - don't want to put too much spray in at once as I don't want it getting on the belt - can imagine my left shoulder getting pretty oily.

BTW, I used the browse feature at the bottom of the screen to upload photo (made sure it was under the size limit) and no luck! How'd you attached your photo?

Yes, I believe the locking mechanism is on one of the sides. I think one of the sides if undone will spin to release the spring. The tough part is getting it to the original tension...not tighter or looser. For what it's worth, I didn't want to risk anything jerry-rigging the seat belt. I will do other things but that I was more comfortable just getting a new one. I'm not sure WD-40 would be the best solution for your problem...its a degreaser and there isnt really grease and grime in there. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with mine. If you figure out your problem be sure to post about it! Taking mine apart was a last resort before just buying a new one.

About the pictures. As of about a year ago it seems no one is able to post using the forum attacher. I'm not sure the reasoning. The images you see posted are using some other website. I use flickr.com but others also use picasa and others. From there you can use an HTML link.
