Steering pump noise - fixed

Post by millarg »

Bought my 03 sport with a whiny steering pump, fluid level was OK, so assumed I'd have to replace it.

You-tube to the rescue, searched noisy steering pump and got several returns.

Short version is - screen in pump reservoir becomes blocked causing fluid starvation to pump and whining

Solution, remove reservoir and clean (carb cleaner), replace, refill and....... Result :o) all good now.

Managed to spray a little ATF around in the process, but otherwise quick and successful repair.

I have a little noise at full lock on both sides, not sure if this is normal or damage from use prior to repair, but it is very slight.

I replaced my power steering belt to fix the problem...I wonder if the problem is a combination of the two. I realized that to tighten it any more resulted in the tensioner bolt actually rubbing on the belt. I opted for the next belt smaller and it has worked perfectly! cold starts all the way left and right...no squeal. This has been a common problem for me; second time in two years. I will definitely be looking into what you did. So basically, just take out the reservoir, clean filter, and replace?

I had a belt "squeal" which tightening the belt cured, the noise I refer to was a groan/whine which happened while turning the wheel (either direction).

As you mention, real simple, just removed reservoir (check you-tube) and sprayed carb cleaner into all three openings (cap, fluid return and draw) until it runs clear (and then some), the "filter (presume it's simply a screen) cannot be seen or removed. Apparently dealers simply replace reservoir to cure issue - cheaper this way.

I also tried to drain system of all old fluid - put and hose on fluid return line and into old oil container, turned on engine and went lock to lock and wheels a few times (I had her up on jacks) - this forced any old fluid out - unfortunately I didn't secure hose to collection drum properly and sprayed old fluid everywhere (I had told the dogs to move, but the didn't listen!). Now I am sure this technique for removing old oil would be frowned upon as it runs the pump dry and could potentially cause damage, but I was quick :D
