Power steering belt squeal

Post by bajaguy »

I'm sure many of you have had your power steering belt squeal at some point... I replaced it about a year ago and I end up having to tighten it periodically because the squeal just keeps coming back. Obviously, its worse in the cold and only noticeable when the engine is cold. Have any of you solved this problem once and for all? (obviously still replacing it every few years) Tightening and tightening just seems like it will lead to a snapped belt and loss of power steering. Any suggestions?

I have just started encountering this same problem (with the addition of the steering not wanting to turn freely right at first) as the temperatures have been dropping. So I am interested in anyone's solutions as well.
I like it here.... [smilie=cheeky-grin.gif]

Check pulley for true run. Flat blade screwdriver while running. You're smart enough not to lose a finger.

Remove belt and clean the grooves out of the pulley.

Make sure the pump isn't getting hot. If the pulley is dragging or the fluid is cherry Kool-aid red.

we have started to encounter this problem also, its been happening for about the last two weeks but about 10 weeks ago we had a new steering pump fitted and also new belts as it was all removed in the first place...i was wondering if i had got something on the pulley belt (i am a great believer in WD40 for cleaning the engine bay) does it run a tensioner somewhere ? i am a total mechanical noob so i havent even looked to be honest
