Aux input/ Satellite radio

Post by Colton0130 »

I am wondering if there is an aux import in the back of the stock radio on a 2003 Baja? I have been running my satellite radio off a wired FM transmitter and it has been still cutting in and out. Does anyone else have a satellite radio in their Baja and if so how do you have it set up?

Thanks

The short answer is no.

I still have the stock radio from my trucklet. I just looked for you, and confirmed what I'd remembered: No simple aux-in on the back. Having said that, as the unit was originally meant to talk to a 6-disc CD changer, you could invest some time & research to find out which pins of the multi-pin connector carried audio into the back of the head from the changer and tap into those somehow to feed audio from your satellite receiver into the unit. You'd have to find out if you can fool the unit into thinking it's playing from a CD changer when you're playing from the satellite receiver - or if it matters...

I went another direction and got a JVC KDHDR50. It had the most functionality that fit into a single DIN space (for relatively little $). USB (native iPod control), HD radio. I got the add-on for bluetooth so I can use my phone hands-free, or Pandora, GrooveShark, etc. An extra ($$) accessory is a satellite receiver that plugs into the back and is controlled just like all the other sources. But even if you don't want to shell out for the JVC accessory, you can still plug whatever you already have into the 1/8" input on the front.

There are plenty of reasonably priced head units with 1/8" aux in ports on the market. Whether it's worth spending more time & effort on research and DIY wiring solutions for your existing head, or spending more $ on replacing it is up to your own situation.
Best of luck.

I made a plate to go in place of the six disc CD changer and cubby hole for my Sirius radio.

I tapped into the power wire going to the radio using one of those power point plugins that is tucked in behind the center console. Bought the adapter that goes between the car's antenna and radio. Otherwise the receiver's FM transmitter is too weak and the piece that fits on the inside of the windshield causes a lot of static. Then ran the antenna wire under the carpet and mounted the antenna on the dash with 3M tape. It works fine mounted them. The instructions are real anal about where to mount the antenna. I don't know why. Maybe because I live in the SE I am closer to the equator and I can get better reception. Sometimes headed NE if surrounded by a lot of trees or hills I'll loose reception every now and then. No worse than the factory roof mounted antenna on my wife's Buick.

I used to piggyback off Dad's subscription but due to the royalties from the recording industry they kept jacking up his subcription from $6 to $16 a month so he canceled it. They offered to reduce his subscription if he stayed with them but for some reason I'm not picking up anything other than the preview channel since he initially canceled it.

If he decides to cancel it for good, my setup maybe for sale if your interested. I considered removing the receiver and just installing a GPS in it's place.

Or you can just copy my design if you want. I had to epoxy the arms since I did not have access to a metal brake. Otherwise I could have made it out of a single piece of metal.
