Cruise control issues

Post by billija10 »

For some reason my Baja cruise acts up in the winter but not in the summer. I does work in the winter but I need to hit the set several times before it works. Any ideas why it may do this when it is cold out but not when it is warm? Today it is 40 degrees and it is acting up.

Same issue on my 03 for years....I was told it was related to moisture in some sensor or whatever. Works great 9 months of the year, finickity during winter. I just live with it.....

Thanks for the reply. I have been living with it too. I have it up for sale and wanted to give possible new owner some info on it. Maybe they can live with it too.

Thanks,

Mine's doing the same thing. I assumed it was oxidation of the contact but haven't pulled it out yet to see.
I find if I hold it it the lever for a sec, it engages (or increases/decreases).
When I have a look, I'll post a result.

Ditto here on my '03. My cruise has always acted up to some degree, but have just lived with too. Since I read this post I have noticed that it is definitely worse in the cold. Think this is related to '03s only?

Yesterday I noticed it took a few tries to get the cruise control to engage on my '03. My wife asked me, "Why are you slowing down?". Thinking I had it set for 55 mph, it finally caught around 40 mph. Then I advanced the speed back up to 55 mph and it did fine. It was in the 20s yesterday.

I don't know about newer type cruise controls but if they haven't changed much then most of the time it's vacuum related. But cold weather always seems to cause them to act up.

Dad had an aftermarket cruise control installed on his new 85 Cavalier by K-mart or Sears. That was "back in the day"...

The kit did not come with a vacuum canister and the speed would vary +/- 10 mphs and would act up worse in winter. I can't remember if he ever had a vacuum canister installed but that probably would have fixed it.

2006 Baja sport. Same issue here. Takes a few attempts to get it to engage, only when it's cold. Once it's 'on' it works as normal.
