On cold start engine races to redline and will NOT come down

Post by TastyHuman »

This morning, with the temperature about 20F, I started my 2003 Baja with Automatic transmission and the engine immediately raced to ~7200 RPM and stayed there. I shut it down, then tried again with the same result. I'm used to it running a fast idle on cold starts but redline is nuts.

Any ideas on what to check?

Is there any way to put it in a limp-home mode so I can get it to the dealer? It sure can't be driven like this.

OK, well I feel pretty damned dumb but maybe someone will learn from this.

I called AAA to have the Baja flat-bedded to the dealer. The technician spent about half an hour labor fiddling with the throttle body only to discover the Husky Liner mat was jamming the pedal open.

Oh well, the tow was "free" anyway.
