Air Intakes for my 03 Baja

Post by da cruck »

Hey everyone I am looking to get an intake system for my Baja and what to here success and horror stories about which one to get with easiest install, best overall performance, and best buying experience? My baja has 220+k miles on it and I am getting ready to have a "reseal" maintenance done on it because I have small leaks in a few areas of the engine. 85% of my mileage has been highway miles, driving back and forth over the past 7 years to tampa and Melbourne to spend time with my son I and I plan on keep the vehicle for a while and want to get best life out of the engine with a few additional that will help with performance, gas mileage etc.

Any insight would be helpful, thank you in advance.

I've got a Cobb intake for sale that I've had on my Baja that I love, I'm doing a turbo swap so I don't need it anymore, if you're interested in reading about what I'm doing there's a thread in the Baja section of NASIOC.

The cobb intake looks like this:

It's the same style as the PRM intake for the RS, it houses a K&N style cone filter in the black section of the intake. It's easy to clean and because the filter is reusable you don't have to keep buying new filters. I've loved the intake when I had it, it was nice and quiet like the stock intake when just cruising around or light throttle, but when you squeezed the throttle it would really sing. The throttle response was better and the engine definitely had an easier time breathing at the top end, instead of loosing steam at the top end it pulled hard to redline. Really felt much more alive above 4.5k rpm. The intake temperatures where the biggest difference. with the stock intake I was seeing 20*c to 35*c above ambient temperatures, with this cobb intake I was seeing 0*c to 10*c above ambient, a huge difference.

Overall I really liked it, I didn't notice a change in fuel economy but I had the K&N panel filter in the stock intake before I put this one on, and if the stock intake isn't restrictive when cruising or light driving then you wont see any fuel economy improvements with an aftermarket intake in those cases. Install was really easy, everything is really straight forward. It draws cooler air from the passenger fender well, the intake is at about the same height as the stock intake so you don't have any problems with sucking in water when it's raining or going through deep puddles.

So yeah, there really weren't any downsides for me going to this cobb intake and if I wasn't doing the engine swap then I would have kept the intake. You can PM me if you're interested in having my intake.
