the second time now that I have changed my oil and I am 1 quart low. I heard a couple years ago that Subarus in general, will do that. Should I be concerned? 72,000 on the '03 Baja.
Also while under there, I noticed this boot leaking. Is this the CV boot? Drivers side.

Re: 1 qrt of oil low
Sounds like your Baja uses a little oil. That's not really a big deal, though annoying. It isn't completely clear from your post, so I strongly suggest checking your oil level periodically (not just when you change it). If your engine's oil consumption increases in the future, running the engine too low on, or completely out of, oil would be an extremely expensive oversight.
That boot is either an inner CV joint boot or the steering rack/tie rod dust cover. I'm afraid I can't tell from that close. Does the outer end of that shaft run right to the exact center of the wheel, and have another rubber boot out there just before it goes through the brake disc? If so, then yes you're looking at the inner CV joint. If the shaft is offset to one side of the wheel, and doesn't go through the brake disc, then you're looking at a tie rod (steers the front wheel).

Thanks for the response. I will keep an eye on the oil and add to as needed. So I supposed what I read about Subs eating oil must be a common occurrence.
Sorry about the close up photo. The boot must me the tie rod end. It does NOT go to the center. I changed the photo for a little better view. I will look into the complexity of fixing that.

That is the inner tie rod boot.
And definately keep a close eye on your oil. At least every 1,000 miles. Try to check with similar conditions (hot or cold), and wait at least 5 minutes after the engine is shut off.

Ah, now I can see better. Yes, it's a tie rod boot. To me, from here (across the internet
), it looks like you might possibly have a leaking seal in that steering rack (that's the thing at the left end of the boot in the photo). You know, I had a weeping seal on my steering rack when I got my Baja a few years ago, as well as some other leaky/weepy seals, and I was able to eliminate them all with an application of Auto-RX. I've used that stuff several times now on multiple vehicles, and it's truly, genuinely a good product. Not knowing exactly what's up with yours I wouldn't have any idea what it would take to fix, but add .com to the product's name if you decide you're interested.

So I read some info on this product, and unless I just didnt dig deep enough, I couldnt see where it may be used in manual transmissions. Dont know if its primarily for automatic, or I just over looked it. I dint see that it got very good ratings.bulwnkl wrote:I was able to eliminate them all with an application of Auto-RX. Thanks for the tip.
Re: 1 qrt of oil low
I didn't know they had a 'ratings' section on their site. Guess I don't get over there much. LOL
You can use it on a manual transmission if you want, though I think it'd be fairly rare to need/want to. I was talking about the steering rack (power steering system).
