new Baja owner-What do I need to do?

Post by aaronski »

Hi there!

I'm now the proud owner of a 05 baja turbo. 100k miles, silver exterior, black interior with ARE shell. it's in great shape and bone stock.
bone stock.
other than regular oil changes and tires, nothing has been done to this car.
When I bought it I checked for any oil leaks, smell of coolant, smell of burning, drove it, seems fine, no leaks, no anything really.

What do I need to do to make sure it stays that way? Here's what I know I need to do:
timing belt
coolant flush
water pump
Shocks(they're dead)
Brake fluid-brakes are spongy
pull filters off banjo bolts
fuel filter
air filter

What am I missing? Any bushings that get worn out and could use a replacement? Plugs/wires?

It sounds like you have a pretty good plan there. I would definitely change plugs at that mileage if they have never been changed, if nothing else to make sure they don't get seized in the head. There are no plug wires to change as the turbo has coil on plug ignition. Also the Baja turbo doesn't have an easily replaceable fuel filter, it is in the tank and isn't supposed to require regular maintenance so I would not worry about that one.

Auto or manual? I would change the transmission fluid/oil and differential oil.

Not a bad idea to replace all the idler pulleys and timing belt tensioner while doing the timing belt. I normally take off the oil pump and replace the o-ring on the back side, the front crank seal and then reseal the pump with RTV and re-install it. It's really easy to do while everything is taken apart for the timing belt change and will prevent the possibility of future leaks. Also consider replacing front camshaft seals while you are in there (if you can remove the camshaft gears)

Check the power steering fluid as people always seem to neglect it. If the fluid is nasty flush that as well.
