CEL w/P0420 code fix?

Post by oldstove »

Hello all fellow Baja drivers. Have followed here sparcely, but have found lots of very useful info. I have an '06 Baja (nonturbo), and have had reoccurring CEL. I have reset them only to have them return a few weeks or months later. Finally borrowed a reader from a coworker and found that I have a P0420 code (catalyst system efficiency below threshold).

After reading several different articles and explainations, I came upon the following...http://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=14675

Which also led me here...

So I'm giving it a try. My question is this. Has anyone here had any success with such a procedure? I mean could this $5.99 "fix" really work? I got the NAPA part # 730-2442 which is the HELP! part # 42009 part because it was shorter and it looked as if it woiuld provide better clearance. Installation was surprisingly easy. Soaked the sensor with WD40 for about 1 hour prior to removing it, and it came out no problem. Total price $5.99 as I already had a 1/2" bit and antiseize handy, and about an hour of time including fetching parts. Any thoughts?

Well here's an update. After doing the "fix", I followed the instructions for resetting the CEL(I do not own a reader or I would have reset it that way). No joy. The light remained. Okay, no problem as I had also read that sometimes CEL's are not neccessarily "latched" until reset by a reader. They instead are continuosly monitored and will reset themselves after a certain number of "cycles" of good readings. So today, after what I figure was about 6 or 8 cycles of starting and runnning around doing stuff since the fix, the light did not illuminate after starting. Stayed off for the entire trip(about 30 minutes). Tried it again a little while ago, and still not CEL.

So who know's, maybe it's "fixed". I'm going to watch it for a while and will post back the results after a few weeks or months. The big test will come sometime this month...I have to get an emmisions test by the end of September. Usually they just hook up to the OBD2 plug and run the car. No sniffer that I could tell. But we'll see. Got my fingers crossed.

Who know's, maybe it's possible that 6 bucks "fixed" it?!
