How to read CEL codes

Post by ColoTruckCar »

Hi All, just bought an '05 Turbo 5spd with 180k. Engine has had a lot of work done to it. Stock. CEL just came on. I'm wondering how to get the trouble code from the computer (without going to dealer)? Need an OBD-II reader, right? I've heard of people downloading iPhone apps and buying a cable on eBay that will allow you to diagnose. Is this a good route? Or should I just take it to local auto parts store (O'reilley/Advance/Checker) and see if they'll check it for free? Thanks!

You can get the ODB 2 Blue Tooth adapter from Amazon for 25 and an ap for 5. Or take it to one of the part stores you mentioned for free.

I got this one, http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005NLCGF8/ref ... 6pb1EKAYQQ from Amazon.

I have a few of the free android aps. Just search for OBD and try them out to find one you like.

I am using the Torque app. on a droid 4 and I really like it. I use a PLX devices Kiwi bluetooth adapter with absolutely no problems. I have tried a few of the $35 generic ebay bluetooth to OBD II adapters and they have all worked flawlessly also.

Ok, good to know! BTW, do the bluetooth / phone integration readers and apps you guys are using offer any functional benefit over just a basic $20 corded handheld like this?:

Those hand held corded ones will work fine for reading and clearing codes. The Bluetooth adapters with the phone apps do have a lot more features and functions. Not only can you read the code but it links you to a web page to look up what the code actually means. You can also pick parameters and datalog them, then email the logs. You can use it as a digital dashboard and select what information you want to view and set it up on the screen as a gauge to view them real time with displayed max/ min values as well. There are several other neat features also. Torque has a track recorder add on that uses the phones camera to record video, then overlays GPS maps and OBD data as well onto the video. it is pretty neat.
