Black Goop under doors

Post by GatorIsaac »

Months ago I noticed some thick, sticky, black goo on the passenger door sill of my Baja. It was really hard to remove and made a mess of everything it touched. When detailing the car this weekend I noticed the goo on three door sills. I found it is oozing from the doors. It is coming out from between the door panels and the metal near the bottom of all doors. Has anyone else had trouble with this junk? It this a breakdown of the door sealing material or what?

Yeah, I had that problem on the driver's side door too a couple of years ago. Never did figure out where it came from. Good ol' WD40 took it off nicely though. I chalked it up the being in the California heat too long.....

That black goop is the mastic that holds the door water shield (semi transparent plastic sheet between the door panel and sheet metal door inner). It is used industry wide in the assembly plants. It's like a really sticky putty and is super gooey when it gets warm. Even in mild temps it can be a mess. I hate working with that stuff - it does get over everything too. We used isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol to clean it up, but even then it still makes a mess. I'll try WD40 next time. Not sure why it dripped down between the door panel and door onto the sill. Does that side see a lot of high heat or sunlight for any length of time? Might just be oozing or sagging over time. No worries about causing any other problems (other than the mess). There 's plenty of it left around the perimeter of the plastic shield to keep it in place. If you ever take your door trim panel off you'll see it holding the water shield on...

Thanks, that explains a lot. I think it really is heat related, as my Baja used to sit in my workplace parking lot all day long and it frequently got over 100 in the summer.......

If you find any malfunction in your car doors, it is really necessary to fix it immediately. It is especially if the locking system is involved.
