PCV Valve Location 2003 NA Baja

Post by davecoon13 »

I don't have a CEL or any symptoms, but I was thinking of pre-emptively replacing my PCV valve. On other cars I've owned, it simply was a push in. On the Subaru, it is actually threaded, 19mm I believe. What is the recommended service interval, I haven't seen it referenced in any maintenance schedules. I have 73,820 miles, and I don't think it has ever been replaced.

I found another forum discussing PCV Valve replacement
In this picture, is the PCV Valve the Green arrow or the Red arrow? There seems to be some debate.

On my Baja, I unscrewed the green arrow one, and there is no valve. The fitting is open. I am guessing it must be the red one. Can someone help me on this? None of the local parts stores stock the PCV Valve. One posting I saw said this part is not intended to be changed.

Another forum I found suggested putting Teflon tape over the PCV Valve threads. Is that really needed?

Which way does it turn? Lefty-Loosie, Righty-Tighty? I tried turning it (red arrow in photo above) with the breaker bar plus extension plus 19mm socket. It just kept turning and turning and turning. I think maybe I will leave it in place until I get a MIL or Check Engine Light. I just hope I can pass emissions. I never saw the PCV valve listed in any maintenance schedules for the Subaru.

Is the PCV valve the red arrow or green arrow? I was able to remove the one that is the green arrow in this picture above, but it was open with no valve.
