compression test issue

Post by bajasterd »

Is it unusually difficult to do a compression or leakdown test on a Baja? I've got a misfire, took it in for new sparks and air filter. The mechanic seems to be begging off doing either test- claiming he can't get his tools into the space. Hope he at least gets to the plugs, if he's going to charge me for them. I had compression done soon after I purchased the car, by a mechanic in the middle of nowhere NorCal. Subaru dealer quoted $500 to do it, which seems expensive but basically consistent with a quote of $375 to do the plugs ( somewhere else). Some time to get at the plugs, straightforward procedure thereafter. I fear a wild goose chase. I want my leakdown. wtf?

A leakdown is a fairly easy test. Take it to the dealership, they should be able to do it for you. If not you could get a compression tester such as this: https://smile.amazon.com/ATPEAM-Cylinde ... pons&psc=1
I am not sure of the quality, but it should work.
