Replacing cracked boot of the rear bar

Post by Rok71 »

Hi,

I have a cracked plastic boot at the bottom of the RHS bar in the trunk. See the picture.

I ordered a replacement part from Subaru.

How do I go about replacing the plastic boot? Do I need to first remove the side panel of the trunk? What else? What is the sequence of the steps?

Thanks!

Did this job today (replaced cracked boot/cover of the trunk bar).

It wasn’t bad. However, after removing the side panel and the trim, one also needs to remove the trim on the side of the cabin leading to the top of the bar. Because the covers must slide on top of the bar through the top, not the bottom.

One piece of advice to those who will be attempting this job. Get enough of side panel and trim clips ahead of the job: you will likely break a few when taking them of

That's assuming my Baja has ANY of the little retainers left - they just up and popped off here and there.
Now I am curious. How hard was it to order / get this "boot" / trim piece? Mine on my left side has split (Florida sun). Was it expensive? Dennis

I searched online and found a dealer who sold it for $28 bucks or so. I ordered clips and retainers from the same place for $.97 per piece.

I can find a link if you want

Instead of ordering the plastic caps, you may want to consider this DIY:

Wow. I never saw that post (and I thought I had been through them all). That is a nice option. I had been (and still may) go for an option of using button fasteners snaps, (or whatever they are called) that would double to hold a tonneau cover on. The only part of that I hadn't figured out yet was fastening the center mounting screw into the slots where the original retainers went. Dennis

There is a guy on facebook that was working on getting them scanned so they could be 3d printed, there has been no update for a while. I just sent a spare I had to a guy in Alabama, he is looking to 3d print them.
