Bondo Restore

Post by jseabolt »

Not trying to pedal any products but I found something that works really well I used on my Baja. You can get it in the paint section at Autozone. It's called Bondo Restore. I think Wal-Mart sells it.

It workes really well on porous surfaces ike the cowl, antenna base and bed. The foam applicator is too large for these sections. I ended up wearing a rubber gloves then putting an old sock over my hand and applied it that way. Then let it dry for about 10 minutes and apply a second coat.

The only thing that didn't turn out all the great are slick surfaces like the roof raills, the black section on the rear bumper and rubber trip like around the mirrors and windows. It tends to streak a bit on slick surfaces. But once it wears off it doesn't look as bad. But it's only visable with a few feet.

I didn't do the entire trunk bed, just around the edges. I would recommend unbolting the wiper arms to do a better job on the cowl and marking where they lay against the windshield with masking tape as a reference.

Also if you get it on the paint, be sure to get it off within a day or it dries. I got some on the mirror and it's not wearing off. I haven't tried polishing compound but it would most likely remove it. The best thing I have found to remove residue on the paint after it dries is take a wet sock and rub it off.

So far it's been on the car 4 months and still looks great. The bottle says it lasts six months. I'm not sure if this is if the car sits outside in the weather or what. I keep my Baja in the garage when I'm not driving something else so it will probably last about a year. I also used it on my Mustang with good results. I'm going to try it on an old vinyl convertible top that needs replacing anyway and see what happens.

What's your application experience with this stuff?
