Black rubber/plastic around windows

Post by bajaninja »

Anybody have any suggestions on cleaning the "spots" (that look like mildew or something) off of the black mouldings around the windows??? I have tried back to black and clorox clean up. If anybody knows how to restore these please let me know.
Thanks!

I have the same issue on mine. I have tried to wash it with various things with no luck...soooooo...I just sprayed over it with a can of black plastic protector and rust inhibitor! If you can't clean it, hide it! HAHAHA! [smilie=666.gif]

Can you give me a name brand; where it was purchased, etc.? Does it look good? Thank you! [smilie=666.gif]

Hmmm...I tried the Back to Black and I couldn't get it to work. I rubbed and rubbed over a few days and no luck. :( I'll have to try it again just to make sure I didn't quit too early. lol [smilie=beadygrinner.gif]

But here are the results that I had with 'Rust-Oleum' Paint for Plastic (Black). Plus, it's just fun spray painting your car. [smilie=666.gif] I'm amazed that it doesn't even look spray painted. This item sprays very evenly.

One side I didn't do yet:

This one corner section I completed:

Very nice looking! I'm gonna have to try back to black again first. . .it's probably a lot easier if it works.

Yeah, I would try that first as well. I tried it and it didn't work on mine so I went with the painting. Since I scrubbed the heck out of it with the Back to Black, it took about the same amount of energy and work on my side. Cleaning, taping, and spraying paint is pretty easy, just timing consuming. I just wish Back to Black worked on my side. [smilie=crying.gif]
I think I'm going to finish painting today when I get home. I'm going to tape it all off and spray it down! [smilie=666.gif]

*edit* I just finished the other corner section today. No more bad looking molding around the windows!! I'll have to paint the rest of the sections to match but it doesn't look bad at all. I just wanted to get rid of that horrible spotting. [smilie=disgust.gif]

emsanon, that looks outstanding. Nice work the the can...man. That is on my to do list.

What the problem is is fallout. Schmegma in the atmosphere like acid rain, UVs, etc. conspires to break down the rubber. It's just what you see in older weatherstripping, like around windshields and the like and it is irreversible, just like wrinkles on a pretty face. The paint is a nice, if not permanent, solution. Should last quite some time tho'.

I kind of wondered if it was something like that. Environmental damage, etc. I am curious to see how long this paint will last. It's a spray on plastic coating so it should last a while...hopefully.

Not yet. I still have quite a bit to paint. I want to paint all the moldings but only got to the two sides that had the most damage. If I get some more free time, I'm just going to tape off the entire thing and just hit the whole thing up with the can. Then it will be all even. [smilie=666.gif]
