2005 Turbo Baja problem...

Post by Alpha Wolf »

2005 Turbo Baja.

Runs ruff at idle and CEL and Cruise control lights are on.

Error P0304.

Mechanic says that is a cylinder number 4 miss fire.

Installed new plugs, no good
Moved coils, miss supposedly did not move with the coil for number 4.
Now doing valve check and leak down test.

Any ideas or suggestions appreciated...

Changing the spark plug wires comes to mind. After doing a quick search a lot of people with 2005ish subarus have trouble with the CEL and cruise lights going on, but I haven't seen any specifically with a rough as well. It seems that when the CEL goes on the cruise turns off and the light blinks, but that may not be 100% correct. Seems like your pretty handy with fixing things ever though of just letting the local dealership or mechanic diagnose and then fixing it yourself? May save some time in the long run.

*edit* The MAF sensor being disconnected was brought up a couple of times.

Well it is at the Dealer now so I cannot do any checks. Wife like dealers..

Dealer just came back and told her that number 4 has low cylinder compression.
Now wants to sell us a new bottom end $5,500 or at least a new head $2,500.

I told her to bring it home and we will go over our options.
Can you pull a head with the engine in the car? Or must the engine be pulled first?

you might want to try nasioc for those technical questions or legacy forums, there are always wrenchheads out there that know all kinds of stuff about working on thier cars.

Hi,
Im new to this forum but have been around on Evom, Nasioc, and vortex forums for awhile. Im not a tech at a dealership or anything but Ive had/fixed enough cars to say the following:
Just because a cylinder has low compression doesnt mean you need a new block or head. Compression #'s and Leakdown tests only point you in the right direction. Someone needs to pull the motor remove that head and find out the issue. It could be something as small as a head gasket or it may be a re-ring, piston, or valve issue. They wont know until they look..replacing the whole block is not diagnosis. Just my .02 cents..but I am wondering how many miles you have on your car as I have the same 2005 Baja!

I took it to a private shop for repairs.

Bad leak down so I had him pull it apart.

I just found out the bad news. Cracked piston and 3 bad valves. No new block or head needed.

I will find out the financial bad news soon.

That's ugly!
It looks like detonation damage.
Are you the original owner?
Any mods?
What octane fuel do you use?

Yikes! That's too bad. The broken ring land pieces didn't gouge the cylinder wall, huh? That's lucky!

Ugh, I think I'm in the same boat as you buddy.

My 05 Turbo just started to make a squeal and began overheating the other day and I was luckily only a block from my house so I got it home. Started looking at it the next day and the squeal was coming from a seized water pump. After replacing the water pump and got it back together and started it up, it's showing the same symptoms your car is having. I sure hope I don't end up with the same problem as you, gonna try and replace the plugs on it and see if that helps. If not, I'm just going to get my friend in LA who works for a drift team to order me a STi engine and salvage out my motor bit by bit. Either way it's going to be expensive so might as well get some more power out of the deal.

Ooooo that's bad. :( Did the temps skyrocket off the gauge?

I had a problem with my radiator leaking and I didn't know it until my resevoir went empty and then air got sucked into the system. Driving along I notice my temp gauge creeping up - uh oh... Limped it home (literally) and it got pretty hot but never went into the red. Had to sit and just turn it off and open the hood a few times.

After replacing the coolant and radiator, everything worked just fine. Really hope it's not expensive for you.

This is a common problem with the Baja. I am experiencing it now as well. It always seems to be a cel for cylinder 4 that starts the process. My issues started with a cel for the AVCS system. AVCS system failed hard with an oil control solenoid dropping completely off the map. Turbo dropped off and timing adjusted so fast I thought the engine was gonna jump out of the car. We went in fixed that issue and did a full tune up (plugs, wires, coils and timing belt). I then started throwing a regular cylinder 4 misfire. We back tracked and re-checked everything. No luck. Did compression yesterday and found cylinder 4 barely alive (pressure 20). So we are tearing off the left bank next week and starting the investigation. It is acting like a valve or valves. Possibly burnt do to lean running?

Looks like $1500 to do the valves on the left bank (cyl 2 and 4).

Good Luck out there.
