Self Introduction & I Want a Baja

Post by theluckyone17 »

Hey y'all,

I'm new to the boards... been lurking for a while. Figured I may as well register and stick around. I may not have a Baja yet, but I want one.

Started out with a '92 Subaru Loyale back in '02 or '03. It was a rust bucket, but I fell in love with it. Picked up a '97 Outback (my current ride), a '00 Outback for the wife (traded in), and a '08 Outback Sport for the wife (her current ride). She asked to look at Toyotas or Hondas when she replaced the '00 OBW. I said it was fine with me, as long as she didn't expect me to drive it (riding in it might not happen either 8) ). We're a Soobie family now.

Anyway, my '97 OBW is starting to get a bit long in the tooth. Her OBS is paid up in three and a half years. We're looking at making a move back to our home town in a year and a half. I'm driving a company vehicle right now, so I'm in no rush to replace the '97. After the move... I'll need something a bit more reliable. A Baja would fit my bill.

The one complaint I've had against the OBW is the ability to put something tall in it. For as often as I need to haul something, I don't need a pickup, nor am I keen on a pickup's mileage. Subaru doesn't make a true pickup, either... so that's out of the question :D.

I figure by the time to replace the '97 comes around, the '05 or '06 Bajas should be priced just about right for my budget. Any thoughts on going turbo versus NA? I'm not one to need to put my foot through the firewall. Even swapped out the '97 EJ25 in my OBW for a '95 EJ22, for reliability reasons (had to replace it anyway due to original engine blowing headgaskets due to a misdiagnosed clogged radiator by the shop who sold it to me). I never missed the extra horsepower, unless I was on the highway.

Anyway... hi 8)

for me, the Turbo was the better bet for towing my motorcycle trailer comfortably...it didn't hurt that I got the premium upgrades that came with the turbo models...but I don't regret the choice one bit!

There is a Subaru dealership close to where I am with a 06 Subaru Baja for sale. not turbo, Its one color ( light Blue ) leather seats, Automatic. going for $21,000 didn't look at how many miles it had.

Thanks for the welcome!

The resale price on the Bajas around me (NY, MA, CT, NJ, PA) are all pretty high still, at least on the '05 and '06 models. I've seen a few '03 models less than $10,000. I don't mind waiting a bit, so the prices on the '05 and '06s come down a bit.

It's good to hear that the turbo does make a difference when towing. I'll want to throw a hitch on mine, just for the sake of having it available if I do want to tow something. It'll at least give me the reason to buy something to tow 8).

Edit: OOOOOOhhhhhh... the Turbo with the leather option came with heated seats. I love the heated seats in my OBW... not sure I'd want to do without them. I might just have to find a turbo now... except that the leather option kills the manual transmission. Gotta find a Baja Turbo w/o the leather, and another one junked with the leather seats, and swap the seats.

*sigh* I haven't even gotten a Baja yet, and I'm already planning on swapping this and that.

LOL, yeah, thats pretty common around here. I dont know if its something about the Baja specifically or just being on forums with all these other enthusiasts, but the urge to make it truly yours is very strong.

I went to get a hitch today from the dealer, they said that Subaru won't sell a hitch for the turbos as it wears out the turbo. Regardless the manual makes no mention of this so I have ordered a Hidden Hitch to get installed. Anyone else hear this story?

I ordered a Hidden Hitch and installed it myself and then got the factory wiring harness by PT# from the dealer without telling them what car I had....had no comments or anything...

Looks like I am going to be doing the same thing. Anything special you had to do to use the factory harness with the Hidden Hitch?

Thanks!
