Baja Bed Cover Options (Backflip)

Post by jeromes »

I just received this e-mail response from my request if a bakflip tonneau can be made for the Baja

Can / will you make one for the Subaru Baja. I know I would buy one, and my research shows alot of Baja owners would also. The Bed of the Baja has not changed since production started.

Response

Special orders are non refundable and are built to specification provided by you –cost is $836.64

VERY interesting....i wonder how it would fit around the roll bars???
also it says on that page it is a clamp on system...wonder if that would work with the baja bed since you do not access any metal lips to clamp to?

hmmmmmmmmm
not a bad price for a different bed top......

It sounds/looks great but has anyone got word on how the roll bars are dealt with?

Maybe it could fit using the existing plastic lip in the bed like OzzBros, and have one panel between the rollbars and back window like the Ozzbros is setup?

Have not heard anything from my first contact with them. I will try to contact them again. It might help if others ask the question about the Baja. A bed cover like this one looks to be the best of both worlds to me. I like the folding of the cover in small sections.

hey Jeromes
did you contact the manufacturer?
or a retailer????
from the email in the first post it looks like you hit up the retailer....
this is the manufacturer's website: http://www.bakfliptonneaucover.com/

There is information on installation here: http://www.bakfliptonneaucover.com/installation
and it looks like we might have to cut holes in the bedliner for the clamp to grab the frame....
but a little further down the page there is info on a cover for the honda rigdeline (the bajas big weird cousin) so maybe there is a way....
the installation instructions are not great but it sounds like they might have found a bolt hole to attach to...heres hoping!

there are the bolt holes that are covers along the edge of the bed on our bajas.....
that does give a bit of hope....
i will take a minute and drop a note to the manufacturer to see what i can learn....

Just received this e-mail. See Below.... :(

Hi Jerome,

We have looked at making a cover for the Baja, but due to lack of demand, we will not be making one. We may get 2 calls a year for this cover, and we need it to be about 20 inquiries per day before it triggers interest in production.

Sorry, but we are not going to be able to help you.

Mark

This is a copy of the e-mail I just sent out. If the setup cost and purchase price of a first production run is OK, then I will start the list of people who want to get in on this.

E-mail sent back

Mark,

Thanks for the prompt response. I understand the need for a larger enough market for the product. If I could pull together enough Baja owners to cover the setup cost and purchase a first low rate production run would you consider that? If so what would you expect the setup cost to be?

If it was somewhat easily removable I would definitely be interested!

Looks like this effort is over. See latest e-mail response.

Unfortunately set up costs at a minimum is multiple tens of thousands of dollars, so frankly, you would have to get thousands of owners together to be able to do this reasonably. I don’t want you to work hard to get a bunch of owners together and then be disappointed in the price. And then, we are not sure if any effort would work due to the unique construction of the bed. I appreciate your ambitious approach and willingness to work with our product, but unless something changed dramatically...this is would not be practical for you or us. I hate to give away business, but your time is precious (as ours) so I wouldn’t suggest you spending any more time in this endeavor with us and rather focus on what is currently available for your truck and then choosing the best option.

Thanks again for your interest.
