Whats up Baja lovers!!!

Post by YBajaSteve »

Well a little background about myself. My first car was a '83 280ZX http://www.cardomain.com/ride/274432 that me and my father restored back to working condition and it was the coolest car in school thats for sure. Image. I was a teen and wanted it to be different so I had Neons and cool interior lights and stuff like that. Then as I grew outta that stage in my life, I bought a 2001 Dodge Stratus RT, http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2543874 with all the options, 3.0L V6, 5spd, leather, Infinity Premium Sound and so on and over the last 4 years I made her into a sharp looking car. ImageWith both these vehicles, Aftermarket support is scarce, but there was always a few people out there who would do custom jobs and turn these vehicles into something out of the ordinary. Well now that I have a baby on the way, I was in the market for a 4 door, or like crew cab truck, something with a bed, since the wife has the SUV portion covered. I needed something decent on fuel (4cyl) but had a large cab, and was reliable. There arent many crew cab trucks with 4cyl's. I stumbled upon the Subaru Baja and instantly fell in love. Well, last month I wrecked my beloved Stratus on I-95 due to some pipes in the road, and my lack of instant stopping power. So now I was in the market for a new car even sooner. Well after local Baja searching turned up nothing, I realized how hard it would be to find a decent low mileage subaru. Last week I finally found one (6 hours from my current location) that fit the bill perfectly. So now I am 2 days away from picking it up. I continue to research my new vehicle and I see that the aftermarket support is again very scarce for this vehicle. Awesome. Cardomain only has like 50 some??? on it!!! Thats nuts. But the thing that suprised me the most is the fact that no one has completely customized thier Baja. Correct me if im wrong. There is not one full body kit. There is not one 6 inch lift with super swampers. No one has put projectors in the headlight houseing or LEDs in the taillights?? I figure it just must be an older crowd with the lack of nessecity to perform any of these mods, but it just blows my mind how i can look up pretty much any other car, ex. Dodge Caravan, and SOMEONE has done something nuts to it. This isnt a bad thing, it just gives me a chance to make my Baja unlike all the others. Im sorry this got so long but I figured Id give you guys my two cents. Im glad to be here and I hope my stay in the subaru community is as fun as my previous cars has been!!!!!!! Expect to see some interesting things with my subie!!!! :D

Steve, good for you! I'm gonna be in the market as soon as I sell my current truck, and I'm the same as you; these things are just begging for mods. Keep us posted on anything you do, and good luck.

SRSLY?

Do you really think there are NO modded Baja's out there? It shares the engine with the FXT, 06+ WRX, and LGT. Plenty of us have done plenty to our cars.

Car domain is for 16 year old kids, just because it isn't posted there doesn't mean it hasn't happened.

well i didnt mean to offend anyone, i was merely saying im suprised at the lack of apparent customization. Yeah engine work is awesome, and i know there are some out there with some intense setups, and to those, I give props. keep up the good work.

I picked up my Baja tonight!!!! Its such a cool vehicle!!!

I think maybe I was leaning more towards cosmetic mods and just the A-typical customization things you find most people doing with their cars.............

Post some pics of it!!!

I got laid off from my job and haven't found a new one in about 7 months so I won't be able to do anything with my Baja for a while. It's not a turbo so I can't do much fun stuff with the engine and performance but I can upgrade the looks!!
My baja is currently in the shop for a couple of days to get my side mirrors painted and for them to buff out some scratches on the side where I think someone ran into it with a car door..or some shopping cart. Wooooooo!

Where I come from, tacky body kits and cosmetic "bling bling" flashy mods without anything to back it up is considered to be "Ricey" or simply "Rice"

Anyway, there is not much out there for the Baja because it is not a very popular vehicle. As a manufacturer of these parts it does not make sense to make such parts if there is no market for them.

I was in fact going to do a projector retrofit in my baja with some Audi or Toureg projectors in stock housings, but upon examining the JDM HID units for the legacy B4 (yes they fit in the baja) I realized the OEM HIDs are of the reflector type and very similar to the same design as the OEM halogens. I gave it a try and sure enough, with just an HID conversion you get a pretty decent beam pattern.

There are both lift kits and lowering kits available for the baja. Almost any grill, bumper, hood, splitter etc for the front of a legacy will bolt on to the Baja if used together. You will find that most mechanical parts for Subarus are interchangeable between the lines.

Congrats on the new car. I hope you enjoy it. Hopefully the extra ground clearance will help with those pipes in the road!

And the washes...gotta watch out for those too...man, I could really go for a better angle of departure on these things, lol.

I thought the lift kit was nixed, I can't recall who was making it-Rallytek maybe? I thought they couldn't get it to work with the AWD system...
