chrome shifter gate

Post by bajabob »

Just tryed this neat little mod discovered by BajaT05 on my 03 classic with auto. I did it by removing the plate from the truck, removing the gear letters plate and then using paint stripper on silver finish. Its easy to do and looks good

Dosen't look like it - as far as I could tell the only part that is chrome under the silver paint is (was) the shift gate.

So thats what you did, I'll have to try that, the silver on my shifter plate is all scratched anyways. I just have to figure out how to get the thing off. I was in there a few times, but didn't look at it close.

The plates not to bad to remove - unscrew the shifter first, lift the trimplate surrounding the gate and then pull the gate by releasing the clips around the sides with a small screwdriver. Before stripping pop out the shift letters.A light coat of stripper is all you need, the paint lifts from the chrome quite quickly.

Thanks Bob, if I get some time this weekend, I'll give it a try. I sure like the looks of it. Mike

That's still plastic under the chrome, right? This looks pretty sweet. especially if I add a leather Outback shift knob.

Yup, still is plastic under the chrome. It looks nice though, I did this to mine awhile ago. I must be hard on the shifter area though because now I have scratches in the chrome!! Mike

Sweet. I'm totally doing this as soon as my fancy knob comes in at the dealership.

I am to lazy to shift. Had a Chevette once, good little car in its day, but got tired of shifting it all the time back and forth to work. I just like to pop it in gear and go. And if I want to make it move, manually shift the auto trans. Make towing easier also. Mike

My only problem with shifting is reminding myself that the Baja is only a 5-speed.

Reverse is right where 6th gear is on our Mini
