12v outlet mystery

Post by TooManyRaccoons »

Hey folks, I've got a silly problem.

This morning the 12v cigarette lighter outlet in my 2003 Baja stopped working while I was charging my phone using it. My first thought was a blown fuse but upon inspection they appeared to be fine. Even swapped em out just in case but no dice. I even took off the trim panel to see if there was a loose wire or something but I couldn't find anything.

Does anyone have any wisdom to share here?

Have you tried a different charger or the same charger in the rear outlet, just to help rule some things out?

Did you swap out the 12V socket or the charger? If one, then try the other. The charger also (usually) has a fuse, if you unscrew a cap near the tip that goes into the socket (if there is one). I'm guessing you already checked the fuse in the interior driver's side fuse block.

Did you check if there's power to the plug that goes into the socket? A voltmeter/multimeter, even a cheap one from Harbor Freight (US) or Canadian Tire (CA) will be good enough for this, if you don't already have one.

Thanks for the comments! I've tried a different charger/adapter and swapped the fuse in my adapter with no luck. I only have the one outlet in my Baja so unfortunately no other port to test.
I am going to borrow a multimeter to test and will update when I do! Thanks again

I was finally able to get my hands on a multimeter and it looks like the outlet is in fact getting power so I'm guessing there is something wrong with the outlet itself. I feel pretty confident replacing the thing if that's what needs to be done, but am not sure where to get one! The quest continues

Straight from Subaru looks to be a good bet.
