Subaru Baja Turbo Transmission Issues P0700 P0720

Post by WarpWar »

Hello, My fathers Baja, a 2005 Turbo with Sportshift Automatic trans is having transmission issues.

First, the car some of the time doesn't want to move, engine revs up, no movement.
When this happens we get check engine light with:
P0700 (Transmission Control system)
and
P0720 (output speed sensor circuit malfunction)
I can let off throttle, maybe shift through gears, try again, and it moves then, same in forward or reverse.

Second, it for the most part doesn't have AWD, it sometimes kicks in, but is mostly in front wheel drive.

We have changed the fluid (he did 3 or 4 drain/refills, fluid was brown, but not black, no debris in it) and have a good level.
(warm car up, shift through all gears, check while running)
He replaced the filter on the side, it was aftermarket dated 2014, he used another aftermarket one.

I bought an appropriate cable and used freessm to see if there were other codes in the trans control module, but all it gives are the two cel codes above, p0700 on the ecu page, p0720 on the tcm page.

I have the Factory service manual for the car, and we are going to troubleshoot the front vehicle speed sensor (what it wants you to check for the p0720 code).

A question, would the sensor failing or having a bad connection cause the intermittent non-movement issue, or is more likely the sensor is seeing no movement when it should and causing the tcm to throw the code?

Do you guys have any advice or ideas for what else to check into?
The is still the no-awd issue as well.

Thank You.
