Sunroof stuck open-help!

Post by cleverbean »

I recently got my 2003 Baja back on the road. Today I opened the sunroof and it would not close. No motor sound whatsoever. Storm was coming and so I tried the manual crank tool—wouldn’t budge for me or two of my friends. So we had a real hell of a time driving home in a thunderstorm with it open. Does this sound like a fuse, a switch, or a motor problem? No issues with sunroof before this but the car did sit for several months and is a bit gunked up in general.

That sounds like a mechanical problem. The hand crank bypasses the motor. Something jammed in there or something popped otu of place.

I've read on the dusty corners of the internet that it's a PITA job to replace the sunroof motor.

My shaggy dog story: My sunroof (on a 2006) wouldn't close just before entering the Costco car wash - PANIC!!!, this was a couple of years ago. I managed to exit the car wash before being soaked and brushed, and eventually close the sunroof a few miles further down the road.

After reading about what's involved to fix it, I haven't even tried to open it since that day. Best of luck, and keep us posted on your progress.

Just stumbled on this thread. Can you tell me how to hand crank the sunroof? My sunroof is working now but I thought I'd ask just in case I ever open mine and it gets stuck.
Does it need a special tool or something?

IIRC, you pop open the control box on the overhead and close it with a 5mm allen wrench. It's been some time, so I may have that a bit wrong.

That was quick. Thanks man but what is the "overhead" and what is the "control box"?

They are the same. The control area where you open/close the sunroof. Take the over off the lights and it should unscrew.

This should help.
